The Immaculate Conception Church in Omaha, Nebraska, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and was designed by Omaha architect Jacob M. Nachtigall. The parish is served by the Institute of Christ the King and celebrated the Traditional Latin Mass, making their priority the sanctuary but also a sense of the transcendent imbued in the entire space. At the request of the client, Canning provided Liturgical Design Services for a beautification project aimed at beautifying the classical architecture. During this time, we provided our design concept, which included pencil sketches and watercolor renderings. The production phase began with the demolition of old ceiling tiles and plaster repairs. Next, a distinguished color palette was chosen for the general and decorative painting, which included painted lettering at six locations throughout the interior that simulated incised stone. The window borders were repainted to make the glass more vibrant; the top of the baldacchino was completely gilded; and a faux marble treatment at the main and side altars was completed to stand out against the humble interior. The result is a simple, balanced interior that focuses all attention to the sanctuary and the Mass.
