This academic project presents a monumental mural program developed for the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow (with Coins)” in St. Petersburg. The project was created using the church’s existing architectural drawings and developed in close relationship with its architecture.
Its visual language draws on Russian Art Nouveau of the turn of the 20th century, particularly the National Romantic movement. The monumental religious paintings of Viktor Vasnetsov and Mikhail Nesterov were key references, especially in the treatment of form and line, elongated figures, rich ornamentation, and the integration of painting with architecture.
